Another big name in the Artificial Intelligence world is LaMDA, short for Language Model for Dialogue Application. It was developed by Google as a technology that will serve to power applications that use conversational formats.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools are booming and, obviously, Google has a research team dedicated to them. Google’s Transformer research project has made important advances in diffusion models, the basis of many of the generative AI applications that recently have become so popular. In early 2023, Google released Bard, powered by LaMDA, to the public.
Bard is a conversational AI service that, according to Google, “seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.”
Is LaMDA the same as ChatGPT?
While both LaMDA and ChatGPT are advanced language models, LaMDA is optimized for conversational AI applications and is designed to be more context-aware. That makes it better suited to be integrated for tasks such as chatbots and virtual assistants.
Being more context-aware than ChatGPT, LaMDA is capable of understanding the context of a conversation and generating appropriate responses based on that context. This also makes it better for tasks such as customer support, where it’s important to get the context of a user’s question or problem before providing an answer.
How does it work? How was it trained?
LaMDA uses a transformer architecture, “a neural network architecture that Google Research invented and open-sourced in 2017”, which enables LaMDA to process information in parallel and learn from the relationships between words in a sentence. That makes LaMDA more accurate and efficient at understanding natural language and generating appropriate responses.
LaMDA was trained on dialogue using a method called “Dialogue Self-Supervised Learning”. This method involved training the model on enormous quantities of conversation transcripts and then fine-tuning it on specific dialogue tasks provided by specialized data scientists.
To train the model, Google collected a large dataset of diverse conversations from sources such as movie scripts, books, and chat logs. This dataset was preprocessed and fed into the LaMDA model. By combining this training method with the Transformer architecture as its key component, the model can accurately predict the next sentence in a conversation given the previous sentences. It allows the model to learn the structure and context of natural language conversations.
For the fine-tuning phase, LaMDA was given specific dialogue tasks, such as answering questions or carrying out a conversation on a particular topic. The fine-tuning process involved training the model on smaller datasets of annotated conversation data to optimize its performance on specific tasks.
LaMDA, like other natural language models, can be used for many purposes, such as:
- Chatbots: development of more sophisticated chatbots that can carry out natural language conversations with users.
- Voice assistants: improvement of natural language understanding of voice assistants, allowing them to understand better and respond to user requests.
- Customer service: more efficient and effective customer service interactions by activating automated chatbots or virtual agents to provide more personalized and contextually relevant responses.
- Education: LaMDA can be used to develop conversational agents for educational purposes, such as language learning or providing tutoring services on specific topics.
- Entertainment: the creation of more immersive and interactive storytelling experiences, such as chat-based adventure games or interactive narratives.
Similar to what we discussed about ChatGPT, LaMDA faces the same kind of challenges.
- LaMDA is only as good as the data it’s trained on. If the training data contains biases or inaccuracies, it may be reflected in the model’s responses.
- While the model can carry out conversations, it may not have the domain-specific knowledge or expertise that is required for certain applications.
- While LaMDA has been trained to capture contextual relationships between sentences, it may not always be able to understand specifics or backstories in the same way that humans can.
- It requires significant computational resources for training and use, which may limit its accessibility to smaller organizations or researchers.
